Role of Iron in the Human Body

Iron is an essential mineral for the continuity of life in the human body. There are a number of complex processes taking place in our bodies that are dependent on the presence of iron. These processes take place on a very molecular level and hence they are not visible. However, without them the human body will not sustain. For instance, iron is required for the transportation of oxygen to various parts and organs of the body.

One of the most important roles of iron is in the production of the red blood cells (RBC). However, it is also an important component of the hemoglobin which is the pigment of the RBC. Iron in hemoglobin binds the oxygen and thus it helps in carrying it to all parts of the bodies through the arteries. Once the oxygen is received by the organs, iron then releases oxygen and takes carbon dioxide from them and carries it back to the lungs to be exhaled out.

Iron also plays a vital role in the process of converting the blood sugar into energy. This energy is the part of metabolism which is extremely important in our day to day activities. For the athletes and people who have to make strenuous use of their muscles, iron helps in giving them the required energy. Iron also has a vital role to play in the creation of the enzymes. The enzymes are responsible for the production of amino acids, hormones and new cells.
