Magnesium is one of the most important minerals that are required by our body. In fact, there are more than 300 biochemical reactions in which magnesium plays a vital role. Apart from this, it helps in maintaining the normal functioning of the nervous system, it supports the muscle function, helps in maintaining the immune system, helps in keeping the heart rate in check, and also aids in maintaining the strength of the bone. Some researches have also proved that magnesium plays an important role in regulating the blood pressure and prevents heart diseases.

Most of the magnesium that our body needs can be easily supplied by including the vegetables and fruits in our diet. Dark green and leafy vegetables are an excellent source of magnesium. Aside from this, fruits and vegetables including avocados, apricots and bananas are also rich in magnesium. Nuts, such as cashews and almonds, also contain magnesium in good quantities. You can also include peas, beans, soy products, and whole grains in your meals to increase the magnesium levels.

Although the magnesium deficiency is rare, it can still happen. Some of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency are anxiety, weakness in the muscles, and drowsiness. People with alcohol and substance abuse are usually deficient in magnesium. This is because the alcohol and drugs prevent the absorption of magnesium.

There are certain side-effects of excess magnesium but it is also very rare since the body removes it through kidney. The magnesium excess may happen if the person is taking external drugs or medications containing this mineral.
